Dotonbori

9 Mar

These are photos that I took during my winter vacation in Dotonburi.
Dotonburi is the sort of place you can eat yourself into ruin.

We had yakiniku at a rather extravagant place. While waiting to use the restroom, I was ‘kidnapped’ by some older adults who were having a party. They were from a Korean language study group, but they wanted to use their English on me. They happily poured wine for me, and asked about my life and travels. At some point, someone put me on the phone with their spouse to show off.

I escaped after an hour or so!

Escape!

24 Feb

I was soaking some clams for my dinner, and a couple of them tried to escape!

Man, oh man, were they tasty!

Traveling through rural Japan: Yamanashi prefecture

4 Oct

This past weekend, I had the unique pleasure of traveling to Yamanashi prefecture to visit some friends I made at last month’s beach party. I had to take the local trains and a bus through the mountains at the border since part of the JR Minobu line was washed out in the last typhoon.

Yamanashi prefecture

I stayed with a friend I’ll call ‘Kiwi’, since he’s from New Zealand.

Believe it or not, it was the first time I’ve slept on tatami mats!

Vangole made from local seafood and local wine.

'Kiwi' made the vangole for our brunch.

‘Kiwi’ is a well-spoken native of Wellington, although his grandparents came from Hong Kong. He lived in southern France for many years, and speaks the language fluently. He’s a writer, come to Japan to isolate himself from academia.

I’ve developed a bit of a bond with ‘Kiwi’. We’ve set up a sort of ‘artiste’ circle between us, sworn to show each other some completed work on 15th of every month. So far, it’s been a big boost to my creativity.

Mochimune beach

Some of my co-workers threw together a last-chance-for-summer BBQ beach party.

The event was staged in a sleepy little area called Mochimune.

(It might be the most foreigners that have ever been in town at one time.)

It was nice to hang out with my co-workers, as well as meet some new people from a neighboring prefecture.

Around 1pm some children approached us, asking for food.

They might have been…. Well, I don’t know. Homeless? Neglected? They were the most worse-off children I’ve come across in Japan. They were falling over themselves to thank us after we gave them a few hamburgers each.

Then, they ran away.
