This past weekend, I had the unique pleasure of traveling to Yamanashi prefecture to visit some friends I made at last month’s beach party. I had to take the local trains and a bus through the mountains at the border since part of the JR Minobu line was washed out in the last typhoon.

Yamanashi prefecture
I stayed with a friend I’ll call ‘Kiwi’, since he’s from New Zealand.
Believe it or not, it was the first time I’ve slept on tatami mats!

Vangole made from local seafood and local wine.

'Kiwi' made the vangole for our brunch.
‘Kiwi’ is a well-spoken native of Wellington, although his grandparents came from Hong Kong. He lived in southern France for many years, and speaks the language fluently. He’s a writer, come to Japan to isolate himself from academia.
I’ve developed a bit of a bond with ‘Kiwi’. We’ve set up a sort of ‘artiste’ circle between us, sworn to show each other some completed work on 15th of every month. So far, it’s been a big boost to my creativity.
